A new international trailer for 'Thor: Ragnarok' features a familiar face

Thor: Ragnarok
It is now expected that international cuts for movie trailers to contain footage that the U.S. versions don’t. When Star Wars: The Force Awakens had yet to be released, the international versions of its trailers and teasers became coveted by fans, giving them their first glimpses of locales, characters, and action scenes not seen in elsewhere. That tradition continues with the new Thor: Ragnarok Japanese trailer, which recently made its way onto the internet.

The extra footage shows up right in the opening seconds of the trailer, with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) being given a dire warning by Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch). Their partnership was first teased in the post-credits scene for Dr. Strangewhere Thor and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) come seeking Dr. Strange’s assistance in finding their missing father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins). Odin’s absence is the precipitating event that enables the villain of Thor: Ragnarok, the goddess Hela (Cate Blanchett), to overthrow Thor’s home, the city of Asgard.

Aside from the brief interaction between Thor and Strange, the footage in the Japanese trailer is largely taken from the previously released U.S. version. We get glimpses of Hela destroying Asgard, as well as plenty of shots of Thor and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) teaming up, which according to Ruffalo will be a major aspect of the film’s plot. Other characters like Loki, Heimdall (Idris Elba), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), and Jeff Goldblum’s eccentric Grandmaster also show up.

It is worth noting that the jovial tone of the original U.S. trailer is intact in the Japanese version, a good indication that Thor: Ragnarok will ultimately share this lighter attitude. It also seems to gel with the direction Marvel Studios is heading within the broader Marvel cinematic universe’s “phase three.” The bright, colorful world established in Guardians of the Galaxy is bleeding into other series like Thor and next year’s Black Panther with sci-fi themes and practical effects prominently featured.

It will be interesting to see how much of that spirit is maintained by the time Avengers: Infinity War comes along. The death-obsessed villain, Thanos, is next up to bat against the Avengers and their allies. In the comics, Thanos was able to use the Infinity Gauntlet — a powerful artifact made with the six Infinity Gems — to literally destroy the universe in hopes of courting his love interest, the avatar of Death herself.

That ultimate showdown with Thanos is still a way off. Thor, however, will have plenty to contend with in the meantime when Thor: Ragnarok hit theaters on November 3.

New Doctor Strange 2 featurette offers a glimpse of madness
Benedict Cumberbatch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Prior to various COVID-related delays, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse on Madness was actually supposed to come out before Spider-Man: No Way Home. But flipping the films around in the schedule has proven to be very fortuitous, since No Way Home has given the Doctor Strange sequel a very compelling lead-in. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) was foolish enough to meddle with the fabric of the multiverse itself when he tried to help Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Now, the bill has come due.

Marvel Studios has released a new video featurette for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness that features Cumberbatch and fellow cast members Elizabeth Olsen and Benedict Wong sharing a few teasers about what's to come. Sam Raimi, the director of the first three Spider-Man movies that starred Tobey Maguire, returned to the Marvel fold to helm this sequel. And his comments in the video are also very intriguing.

Dr. Strange chases dreams in new Multiverse of Madness trailer
Doctor Strange looking to the distance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

It has been nearly six years since Doctor Strange hit theaters, but Stephen Strange has been pretty busy in the MCU. Between memorable appearances in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, it's been impossible to forget about him. In exactly one month, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will arrive in theaters with a fresh batch of trouble for Stephen. And if the new teaser trailer is any indication, Strange's problems may literally be of his own making.

In the latest clips, Strange's feelings for Christine Palmer come to the forefront. Strange lost her love in the first movie long before he became a powerful sorcerer. Strange ultimately choose the path of magic over a life with Christine, and she moved on with someone else. Yet Strange can't stop dreaming about what might have been. And in the multiverse, all things are possible.

You may not have realized it, but today is the day that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was supposed to come out. Unfortunately, we will have to wait until May to see the good doctor for the first time since Spider-Man: No Way Home. And if Strange thought he had it bad in that story, wait until he sees what awaits him in the multiverse.

Perhaps to help ease the additional wait, Marvel Studios has released four new high-quality pictures from the Doctor Strange sequel. First up is none other than Doctor Stephen Strange himself, as portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch.
