3 underrated action movies on Amazon Freevee you should watch in October 2024

Matt Damon in Jason Bourne.
Universal Pictures

It’s hard to find a good movie on Freevee these days, because almost all of the search results put Amazon Prime Video films at the top. Considering that Prime Video now has its own ad tier, there’s very little difference between watching a film on Prime Video and catching a movie on Freevee.

Additionally, the remaining Freevee action movies don’t offer a very good selection for fans. Sometimes a free film isn’t even worth watching at that price. Thankfully, there are three underrated action movies on Amazon Freevee that we can wholeheartedly recommend that you watch in October.

Jason Bourne (2016)

Matt Damon and Julia Stiles in Jason Bourne.
Universal Pictures

By now you know his name, but the title character of Jason Bourne had been on an extended hiatus until his return in 2016. Matt Damon reprises his role as the ex-assassin, who apparently didn’t go far enough underground to protect himself from detection. Bourne’s former ally, Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles), has uncovered previously undiscovered details about his past. And by attempting to share her discovery with Bourne, she’s led the CIA right to him.

CIA Director Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones) sees this as the agency’s chance to silence Bourne once and for all. But for the assassin known as The Asset (Vincent Cassel), finding Bourne is personal. The Asset blames Bourne for exposing his identity years before, which led to his capture and torture. And this killer intends to get his payback on Bourne no matter how many people he has to murder.

The Grey (2012)

Liam Neeson in The Grey.
Open Road Films

Who would you pick in a fight: Liam Neeson’s action heroes or a wild wolf? In a one-on-one battle, Neeson’s characters might come out on top. But against a pack of wolves, even Neeson’s John Ottway may not be able to save his own life. John is a sharpshooter at a remote oil facility who uses his skills to keep the grey wolves at bay. But when John and his co-workers survive a plane crash deep in the Alaskan wilderness, it’s the wolves’ turn to pick them off one-by-one.

John’s a formidable fighter, but the odds are increasingly stacked against him and his fellow survivors. It’s not a question how far John will go to survive, it’s whether survival is even an option.

The Mist (2007)

The cast of The Mist.
MGM

The Mist is admittedly more of a horror story than an action flick, but there’s plenty of excitement to tide over fans of the genre. Frank Darabont directed and wrote this adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel, and it feels like a prototype of The Walking Dead as several cast members from that show appear years before it was filmed.

Thomas Jane stars as David Drayton, a resident of a small town in Maine who is with his son, Billy (Nathan Gamble), when the local supermarket is enveloped by a deep fog. More alarmingly, giant creatures roam in the mist and kill anyone who dares to venture outside. While David and his friends plot their next move, a religious zealot, Mrs. Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden), gains followers when she survives an attack untouched. And it isn’t long before the grocery store becomes more dangerous on the inside than it is on the outside.

Frodo lying on the ground looking terrified as the One Ring flies above him in Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

For many of the fantastic movies on this list, you have until Halloween night to watch before they’re gone from Amazon Prime Video. The wonderful thing about the streaming service, to which you can subscribe on its own or as part of an Amazon Prime subscription, is that there’s always a wide selection of movies and TV shows, including library titles and originals. But when it comes to the former, sometimes, they are removed from the service without warning. Consider us your red alert.

If you love any of these movies or have been meaning to watch them, including all the Lord of the Rings movies, you’ll want to carve out some time this month because they will be gone from the streamer soon. These five movies leaving Amazon Prime Video in October 2024 are streaming for another week or so.

3 sci-fi movies on Hulu you need to watch in October 2024
Two people look in horror in Underwater.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes are both back on Hulu this month after a short hiatus while they were on other streamers. But for the sake of everyone's sanity, neither will be featured among the three sci-fi movies on Hulu that you need to watch in October. The Planet of the Apes reboot movies are great, but we've written about them so many times that it's a good opportunity to turn our attention to some of Hulu's other sci-fi flicks.

Our picks for October are all sci-fi/horror films, which is only fitting since Halloween is just a few weeks away. But all three are very distinct stories, and you'll find different kinds of scares from each of them.
