International trailer for Tomorrowland sheds light on Disney’s mysterious sci-fi film

International trailer for Tomorrowland
Most movie trailers tend to recycle the same footage over and over again, so it’s usually worth noting when a preview offers up a significant amount of fresh footage for an upcoming film — especially when the project is as shrouded in mystery as Disney’s sci-fi adventure Tomorrowland.

A new, international trailer for Tomorrowland debuted online this week, and the brief preview of the film is surprisingly packed with scenes that didn’t appear in any of the previous teasers for the film. More importantly, however, is that the new scenes provide quite a bit of context for the film and its fantastic sci-fi premise.

While we won’t go into too much detail about what happens in the trailer (so as to avoid spoilers for those who want to preserve the mystery), the footage does hint that the film will be somewhat self-aware, with the Disney theme parks — and specifically, the “Tomorrowland” attraction that inspired the film — playing a role in the story. The trailer even features a mention of Walt Disney himself.

Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Brad Bird (RatatouilleThe Incredibles), Tomorrowland stars Britt Robertson as a brilliant teenager who’s given a pin that transports her to a strange place where jetpacks and all manner of futuristic, sci-fi technology is a reality. After meeting with former boy-genius Frank (George Clooney), she gets caught up in a dangerous mission to save the world using the secrets of an enigmatic place located somewhere between time and space.

The film’s script was penned by Bird and Lost co-creator/writer Damon Lindelof (who also co-wrote the screenplays for Prometheus and Star Trek Into Darkness), and along with Robertson and Clooney, the cast includes Hugh Laurie as brilliant scientist David Nix, as well as Raffey Cassidy, Tim McGraw, Judy Greer, Kathryn Hahn, Keegan-Michael Key, and Thomas Robinson.

Tomorrowland hits theaters May 22, 2015.

Moonhaven review: A promising sci-fi mystery
Paul and Bella look at each other in Moonhaven.

Moonhaven begins, like so many mysteries before it, with a murder. The violent act in question effectively kick-starts the series’ story, but Moonhaven doesn’t waste much time drawing out the mysteries of its opening killing. In fact, in the second scene of the Moonhaven pilot, not only has the victim’s identity been discovered by the proper authorities, but so has her killer’s. The series resolves many of the questions surrounding its inciting incident at a surprisingly brisk pace that its otherwise exposition-heavy pilot episode fails to maintain.

However, while Moonhaven’s first season rarely keeps up the economic pace of its opening moments, the subversive spirit of its second scene is present throughout all of the Peter Ocko-created sci-fi series. Across its first six episodes, Moonhaven constantly delivers a number of playful twists on familiar tropes and figures. The detectives at the center of the series’ story, for instance, are not obsessed with avenging those who have been killed, but with helping those who are still alive grapple with their grief.

Final trailer for Nope sheds light on Jordan Peele’s film
Keke Palmer as Emeral looking confused in Nope.

Since becoming a horror sensation following the release of Get Out, writer and director Jordan Peele has seemingly embraced the idea that his films work best when audiences don't know what to expect. Us was a prime example of that, and Peele's next movie, Nope, is continuing the tradition. Previous trailers have hinted that this horror story would venture into the realm of sci-fi and aliens. But the final trailer for Nope finally offers some revelations about how its main characters find themselves in a science fiction nightmare.

Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer are co-headlining Nope as siblings OJ and Emerald Haywood, the owners of a ranch who are inexplicably tormented by an unidentified flying object. Upon realizing that they could potentially cash in on this phenomenon, the Haywoods attempt to get proof. Unfortunately, this appears to have antagonized the UFO. And the Haywoods will suddenly find themselves in way over their heads as things begin to escalate.
