Here’s your first look at Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix series, ‘Trollhunters’

If you’ve ever wondered what a Guillermo del Toro animated series would look like, you now have an answer.

DreamWorks premiered the trailer for the upcoming animated series created and produced by Del Toro during New York Comic Con, and surprisingly, it’s not nearly as creepy as one might expect from the filmmaker who gave audiences Pan’s Labyrinth and Crimson Peak. In fact, the series — which will debut on Netflix later this year — actually looks kind of, well … fun.

The series follows a teenager who encounters a magical amulet on his way to school one morning and soon finds himself caught up in a long-standing war involving a secret civilization of mystical, powerful creatures living below the surface of the Earth. Assisted by some human and troll allies, the teen must learn to carry the mantle of the “Trollhunter,” and safeguard the balance between the human world and the world of the trolls.

The series features an impressive cast of voice actors, including a few that are not strangers to Del Toro’s projects. Among them are Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Sons of Anarchy), Kelsey Grammer (Frasier), Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead), and Charlie Saxton (Betas). The script for the series was penned by Del Toro, Tom Wheeler (The Cape), and Kubo and the Two Strings writer Marc Haimes. Wall-E and The Incredibles animator Rodrigo Blaas directs the series.

The first trailer for the series teases some of the impressively detailed environments in which the series will unfold — particularly the world of the trolls — as well as the comedic and family-friendly nature of the series, which should offer a nice opportunity to introduce young audiences to Del Toro’s work.

Along with revealing the first trailer for the series, DreamWorks also announced the official premiere date for the series. The entire first season of Trollhunters will debut at 12:01 a.m. December 23 on Netflix.

Nightmare Alley review: Guillermo del Toro delivers a bleak, beautiful noir
Bradley Cooper navigates a carnival funhouse in Nightmare Alley.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has a knack for making audiences uncomfortable in beautiful ways. Whether he's exploring human-merman romance in The Shape of Water or filtering the horrors of war through a dark, fairy-tale lens in Pan's Labyrinth, he always finds a way to drape darkness and depravity in a gorgeous, cinematic atmosphere that captures your attention and holds it there, no matter what unfolds on the screen.

Such is the case with Nightmare Alley, a neo-noir thriller co-written and directed by del Toro and based on William Lindsay Gresham's novel of the same name. The film follows an ambitious carnival worker who uses his training in reading and manipulating people to pull off one lucrative con after another and rise through society. When he partners with a cold, calculating psychologist in order to go after a wealthy, ruthless businessman, the former carny soon finds himself wrapped up in a dangerous game he can't afford to lose.

Stanton Carlisle can read minds "under the right circumstances." At least, that's what Bradley Cooper's character wants people to believe in the first trailer for Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro's Nightmare Alley.

The first trailer for del Toro's thriller features Carlisle under the scrutiny of a lie detector test, choosing the right words that will allow him to bend the truth without admitting that he's a fraud.

Netflix’s The Sandman series gets chilling first-look clip
Tom Sturridge as Dream in The Sandman.

It's been a good summer for fans of Neil Gaiman's seminal fantasy comic book series The Sandman. Last week, Audible released The Sandman: Act II, a continuation of the audio adaptation. However, Netflix has something much more ambitious in the works with its live-action Sandman series. During its Tudum online event, the streaming service debuted the first clip from the series, which features Tom Sturridge as Dream/Morpheus.

Within the mythology of the series, Morpheus is one of the Endless, seven siblings who embody the universal concepts of Dream, Destiny, Death, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium. The preview clip features Game of Thrones veteran Charles Dance's Roderick Burgess as he and his cult undertake a dangerous ritual to capture Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) herself. Unfortunately for Dream, he's the one who falls into their trap. And there he remains for decades until the series picks up in the present.
