Back in Action (2025)

Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz stand next to each other and stare in Back in Action.
John Wilson / Netflix

For Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz, Back in Action is the perfect title for their respective returns. Foxx suffered a life-threatening stroke in 2023, while Diaz hasn’t acted in a decade. The duo, who previously collaborated on 2014’s Annie, play former CIA operatives returning to the field in Back in Action, one of the most popular Netflix movies this year.

While working a job, Matt (Foxx) and Emily (Diaz) are double-crossed and narrowly escape a plane crash with their lives. With Emily pregnant, the couple leave the CIA to start a family. 15 years later, Matt and Emily are married and live a quiet life with two children in Atlanta. After the couple is involved in a brawl outside of a nightclub, their former enemies come after them. With their cover blown, Matt and Emily must rely on their old CIA habits to escape trouble and save their kids.

The Nice Guys (2016)

The Nice Guys - Main Trailer [HD]

The Nice Guys is the internet’s favorite movie, and for good reason. The 2016 action comedy from Shane Black is a hilarious and entertaining showcase for Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling. Crow and Gosling are right up there with Lethal Weapon’s Danny Glover and Mel Gibson for Black’s best cinematic duos. In 1977 Los Angeles, Holland March (Gosling) is a struggling private eye hired to find a porn star. Jackson Healy (Crowe) is an enforcer hired to protect Amelia (Margaret Qualley).

When Amelia disappears, Healy reluctantly teams up with March to find her. The investigation leads the duo down a dark path that could cost them their lives. The chemistry between Crowe and Gosling is impeccable, hence why the internet has been trying to greenlight a sequel for a decade.

21 Bridges (2019)

Chadwick Boseman was on his way to becoming one of Hollywood’s best stars before cancer tragically took his life in 2020. While best known for his work in the MCU, Boseman was a terrific action star, with 21 Bridges being one of his more underrated movies. While stealing an exorbitant amount of cocaine from a Brooklyn shop, Michael Trujillo (Stephan James) and Ray Jackson (Taylor Kitsch) kill multiple cops during their escape.

The criminals flee from Brooklyn to Manhattan, where they plan their next move. Enter Andre Davis (Boseman), a hard-nosed cop tasked with leading the investigation. Davis gets approval to lock down the island of Manhattan, meaning all bridges and tunnels will be closed. The further Davis becomes embedded in the case, the more he’s convinced that something bigger is at play that may or may not involve dirty cops.

5 movies leaving Netflix in January 2025 you have to watch now
Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty.

The start of the new year is starting to hit the rearview mirror. As we progress into January, Netflix will start to release more movies from its 2025 slate. One of the first major Netflix originals of 2025 is Back in Action, starring Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz. Released on January 17, Back in Action had the biggest premiere weekend for an English-language movie since 2022's The Adam Project.
Back in Action will remain on Netflix for a long time. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for these five movies, which are leaving at the end of the month. Schedule some time to watch some of these films before heading to a new streaming service or rental service. Our picks include a 2012 action comedy, a political thriller, and a hilarious spoof on teen movies.

21 Jump Street (2012)

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum should not work as a comedic tandem on paper. However, the two actors form a hilarious tag team in 21 Jump Street, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's action comedy based on the 1987 TV show of the same name. In the early 2000s, high school students Morton Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Greg Janko (Tatum) are complete opposites. Schmidt is a nerdy outcast, while Jenko is a popular jock.
Seven years later, the duo become unlikely friends while studying to become police officers. Their first assignment is to go undercover as high school students to infiltrate a drug ring and find the suppliers. This time, Schmidt fits in with the cool kids, while Janko bonds with the geeks. Yet the duo quickly realizes that high school isn't any easier the second time around.

If you have to watch one Amazon Prime Video movie in January 2025, stream this one
The cast of Mystery Men.

The past 25 years of cinema have been overshadowed by the emergence of superhero movies as a driving box office force, so much so that filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and James Cameron have openly hoped that the genre would go the way of the Western. Given the emergence of superhero fatigue — especially with Sony's Marvel films like Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter — they may get their wish. But if there was one movie from the turn of the century that was ahead of the curve, it was Mystery Men, the superhero spoof that hit theaters in 1999. It's also our pick for the one Amazon Prime Video movie that you need to watch in January.

At the time that Mystery Men was released, the only Marvel movie that had any traction was Blade, and DC was coming off of the disastrous Batman & Robin. Comparatively, Dark Horse Comics had a good run of comic book movies in the 1990s including The Mask, Timecop, and, of course, Mystery Men. The source material was writer and artist Bob Burden's Flaming Carrot Comics, a title that has never crossed into the mainstream. But it turned out to be an early predictor of what the superhero genre would become. In fact, Mystery Men may be even more timely in 2025 than it was at the time of its release.

3 underrated shows on Netflix you need to watch in January 2025
Peter Hermann, Sutton Foster, and Nico Tortorella in Younger.

After closing out strong in 2024, Netflix is keeping the momentum going with an exciting slate of new and returning shows this month. One of the most popular shows on Netflix, The Night Agent, returns with a new mission in season 2 on January 23. Speaking on missions, The Recruit, an espionage adventure series, returns for its sophomore season one week later on January 30.

Those are only two of the many shows available to stream with the click of a button. From dramas and comedies to horrors and thrillers, Netflix always adds more shows to its vault every month. Some of these shows are criminally underrated and deserve recognition. Examples of these undervalued shows include a TV Land sitcom, a wrestling program, and a superhero drama.
