New trailer for ‘Wonder Woman’ goes heavy on the action and origin story

DC Comics superhero Wonder Woman his the big screen in a big way next year, courtesy of a live-action solo movie starring Gal Gadot as the iconic character, and Warner Bros. Pictures is keeping anticipation high for the film with a brand new trailer that debuted this week.

The three-minute preview manages to pack in a lot of fresh footage featuring Wonder Woman battling her way through World War II, and leans heavily on the action elements of her upcoming, much-anticipated feature film.

Directed by Monster filmmaker Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman casts Gadot as the popular superhero and Star Trek franchise actor Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, the man whose encounter with the isolated world of the Amazons prompts Wonder Woman’s adventure in the outside world. The film’s supporting cast also includes Robin Wright (House of Cards), Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), David Thewlis (The Theory of Everything), Ewen Bremner (Exodus: Gods and Kings), Saïd Taghmaoui (American Hustle), Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In), Connie Nielsen (Gladiator), and Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead). The script was penned by Pan screenwriter Jason Fuchs.

Gadot made her debut as Wonder Woman in this year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which hinted at the character’s past adventures in World War II — a story that the upcoming solo film will explore while providing an origin story of sorts for her. Gadot will then reprise the role in November 2017 for the superhero team-up movie Justice League.

Wonder Woman is the fourth film in Warner Bros. Pictures’ cinematic universe based on DC Comics characters, following Man of SteelBatman v Superman, and Suicide Squad. The film hits theaters June 2, 2017.

Not too long ago, 2020 was shaping up to be a big year for movies. A lot can change in a few months, though.

After shutting their doors for several months due to the threat posed by the coronavirus pandemic, theaters are expected to begin gradually reopening in the weeks to come, with industry-leading chain AMC Theatres planning to have all its locations back in business at some point in July. Although questions remain about how safely this can be done, there's also plenty of uncertainty about what will be on theaters' screens if and when this happens.
