The war has begun in the latest X-Men: Apocalypse trailer

Batman, Superman, and the Avengers aren’t the only superheroes facing an impending, big-screen battle this year. The X-Men will have their own all-out war to deal with in a few months.

20th Century Fox has released a new, explosive trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse that offers a preview of the devastating conflict that will turn mutant against mutant in the upcoming film, and will introduce one of the team’s most dangerous enemies.

Along with featuring most of the major players in Apocalypse — both returning characters and newcomers — the trailer also includes quite a bit of new footage from the film, which director Bryan Singer has described as the third chapter in a trilogy that began with 2011’s X-Men: First Class.

Appearing in the trailer are many of the franchise’s newest cast members, including Star Wars: The Force Awakens actor Oscar Isaac as the titular villain Apocalypse, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler, Ben Hardy as Angel, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, The Newsroom actress Olivia Munn as Psylocke, and Lana Condor as Jubilee.

Returning actors include James McAvoy as the team’s leader and mutant telepath Charles Xavier, as well as Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert, and Lucas Till as Havok (the energy-manipulating mutant he played in First Class).

The official synopsis for the film reads as follows:

Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

X-Men: Apocalypse is scheduled to hit theaters May 27, 2016.
