Deerhoof — Plastic Thrills

Popular indie rockers Deerhoof made a triumphant return this week, announcing the upcoming release of a new album with a perfectly distorted rock-and-roller called Plastic Thrills. The short new track features the band’s traditional back-and-forth vocals, a shredding riff in between each new phrase, and a well-placed guitar solo to close it all out. Think of these two minutes as your week’s musical appetizer.

Big Boi — Mother of Dragons

Classic Southern rapper Big Boi — co-founder of legendary Atlanta duo Outkast — offered his services to HBO’s Game of Thrones hype album this past March, and we thought there would be nothing more appropriate than to highlight his excellent show-themed verses ahead of its premiere this Sunday. A heavy-hitting number that showcases the wordsmith’s clean rhythm, the song is a real banger — perfect to get you pumped for the unveiling of the biggest show around.

Fantastic Negrito — About a Bird

About a Bird - Fantastic Negrito (Official Audio)

One of the first singles from songwriter Xavier Dphrepaulezz’s debut album as sonic alter-ego Fantastic Negrito, About a Bird is a brilliantly-sung soul single laden with claps, guitar solos, and musical catharsis. With a debut album full of similarly-classic soul cuts called The Last Days of Oakland launching on June 3, there is a lot to look forward to from the Northern California artist in the near future. If even half the tracks are as good as this, it could be one of the best albums out all summer.

Ravi Shavi — Hot

Sizzling guitars, dirty vocals, and driving drums propel Providence-based rockers Ravi Shavi’s latest single Hot to the top of your weekly workout playlist. A single which finds itself perfectly paced for that sweaty intensity you need to sprint out the end of a long run, the track comes as part of the band’s forthcoming EP Independent, which is due out in late May and should build them a following nationwide.

Seratones — Don’t Need It (and more!)

Seratones: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Shreveport, Louisiana natives Seratones meld grimy garage rock with smooth soul. The band shined brightly during their recent three-song performance at NPR’s famed Tiny Desk. Riveting live players whose music is simultaneously deep and catchy, the four piece outfit will easily find a cubby hole in your musical heart — probably right next to more popular Southern stars Alabama Shakes.

Person listening to spatial audio using Apple AirPods Max headphones.

At WWDC 2021 (Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference), Apple officially added support for spatial audio with Dolby Atmos Music for Apple Music. It quickly became a popular format among consumers, too: Apple estimates that by February 2022, playback of spatial audio tracks had quadrupled from just a few months prior as people experimented with the format. There's a lot of ground to cover, and some of it is a bit technical, but we're going to break it all down in easy-to-understand terms. You'll be a spatial audio expert in minutes, and you'll know exactly how to access this growing trend in movie and music streaming.

How to convert your vinyl to a digital format
Rebirth of cool: Is vinyl ready for a second wind, or just a fad?

It doesn't matter one bit if your vinyl collection consists of just a single milk crate or if it fills several Ikea Kallax shelves and is slowly taking over your home — we can all agree that there's just something about vinyl.

Maybe it's the warm, uncompressed sound spinning off a solid turntable, or the feel of holding a physical piece of art in your hands while the record spins — it's a special experience that has regained much of its glory in a world dominated by digital streaming. The problem is, records are fragile, and crates full of them don't fit in your back pocket.
