A spectacular stripped-down version of classic R&B single No Diggity from Portland’s Liz Vice appeared online this week, providing some much needed catharsis for people stressed about the oncoming fall weather — or struggling to comprehend Apple’s choice to ditch the headphone jack. A tasteful interpretation which showcases her mellow vocal style, this one takes the edge off a hard week like no other.
Dan Deacon — Change Your Life (You Can Do It)
Dan Deacon is known worldwide for his astoundingly high-energy performances and beautiful vocoder-laden music. Both elements are well showcased on his latest single Change Your Life (You Can Do It). A fast-paced electro-house track which centers around the title’s parenthetical phrase, this one will immediately cement itself towards the end of your workout playlist, when you need a mental boost.
Cass McCombs — Opposite House
Watch performers blow tea all over themselves and their musical host over the course of songwriter Cass McCombs’ video for recent single Opposite House. It’s an odd visual amalgamation that actually suits its groovy ’70s host track, where calm vocals and synth strings blend behind cool guitar riffs and background vocals from indie queen Angel Olsen.
Bloodboy — Keep Your Disease
Los Angeles plays host to all kinds of excellent genres, and excellently pop-laden rock is one of its strong suits. Bloodboy’s Keep Your Disease, the latest brilliantly-produced hard rocker to emerge from the city of fame, grabs your eardrums from the first second, transporting your mind to a world in which you ride motorcycles, drink all day, and do things that people with better morals might regret. In other words, it’s one heck of a musical vacation.
