How to cancel Spotify Premium

Spotify is the world's most popular music and podcast streaming service for a reason. It has a catalog of over 100 million songs, the interface is fun and easy to use, and it's full of features that allow for music discovery, great playlist creation, and sharing. And while its main Achilles heel is that it doesn't offer higher resolution audio like many of its competitors such as Apple Music, Tidal, and Amazon Music, it's Premium tiers are reasonably priced at between $10 and $16 per month. So why would anyone want to cancel Spotify?

What You Need

Maybe you want to switch and try something new. Maybe you signed up for the Spotify free trial and want to cancel before it renews. Or maybe you just want to save a little money and try Spotify Free for a bit. Before you rush into that though, keep in mind that you won’t be able to download music for offline use if you drop down to Spotify Free. You also won’t be able to stream audio at a higher bit rate or play any song on demand when using your mobile device, and will instead need to shuffle playing an artist, album, or playlist. But, if your mind is set on canceling Spotify Premium, here's how to do it.

How to cancel Spotify Premium

Step 1: The first thing you’re going to want to do is to fire up your browser of choice and head over to spotify.com/account, which should open automatically in the Account Overview section on Spotify’s website.

If you use the Spotify desktop app, accessing your Account settings from the drop-down menu will also open a browser window and get you to the same place. This cannot be done using the smartphone app, though.

Step 2: Now you’re at your Account overview screen, select Available plans from the sidebar on the left. A box will then appear with information about your current membership and other plans available.

Step 3: Scroll down to the bottom and locate the option entitled Spotify Free. It’s at the very bottom. Click the big Cancel Premium button below it.

Step 4: Now all that’s left to do is confirm your decision by tapping Continue to cancel and following through the confirmations. Again, remember that your membership won’t terminate immediately. You’ll have through the end of your paid subscription date to continue using it.

Step 5: Note: Canceling your Spotify account using an Android device is pretty much the same as doing it on a desktop — it's done via a web browser on the device.

If you signed up for Spotify on your iPad or iPhone, there's a good chance you opted to have Apple bill you right through the App Store, instead of prolonging the registration process by handing your credit card details over to Spotify itself. There's no denying it's a lot more convenient, but taking that route means you'll need to cancel your Premium subscription in a slightly different way, using an iPad or iPhone.

So, what do you need to do? It's simple. Dive into the Settings application on your iPad or iPhone, then click on your name at the top to open your Apple ID. From there, select Subscriptions. A list of all your various different recurring payments will then appear. Simply select Spotify, then tap the button labeled Cancel Subscription. As soon as you click that, the renewal of your Premium membership will be terminated.

Once canceled, you'll be able to keep using Premium up until the date your next payment would have been due. That means if you told Spotify you wanted out on September 3, but your membership isn't scheduled to renew until October 2, you can use it up until then, since you've already paid for the period. Spotify doesn't offer refunds, even if you cancel before the renewal date and don't intend to use it between now and then. You will now also be able to delete your Spotify account, if that's what you're hoping to do.

What is spatial audio? Apple’s 3D sound feature fully explained
Person listening to spatial audio using Apple AirPods Max headphones.

At WWDC 2021 (Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference), Apple officially added support for spatial audio with Dolby Atmos Music for Apple Music. It quickly became a popular format among consumers, too: Apple estimates that by February 2022, playback of spatial audio tracks had quadrupled from just a few months prior as people experimented with the format. But what exactly is spatial audio? How is it different from (or the same as) Dolby Atmos? And what kind of audio equipment do you need to listen to it?

There's a lot of ground to cover, and some of it is a bit technical, but we're going to break it all down in easy-to-understand terms. You'll be a spatial audio expert in minutes, and you'll know exactly how to access this growing trend in movie and music streaming.

Spotify’s HiFi tier was MIA in 2021. Will 2022 be any different?
Spotify app icon on iPhone.

Spotify announced almost a year ago that it would launch a new subscription tier for its Premium members called Spotify HiFi before the end of 2021. As the name suggests, Spotify said the new, more expensive tier would distinguish itself by offering "lossless CD-quality" audio -- a significant step up in quality over the company's current maximum streaming quality, which is still based on a lossy compression system. But 2021 is now in our collective rearview mirror and, so far, there's still no sign of Spotify HiFi.

And concerns are growing that even Spotify can't say for sure when or if it will actually launch the new tier. Now, 9to5Mac has spotted a message from the company on its community support site that doesn't exactly fill us with confidence:

Chill with Spotify for free on Delta Airlines this holiday season
Spotify app icon on iPhone.

There's some good news for Spotify listeners who are planning to take a trip this holiday season on Delta Airlines -- you'll be able to stream as much music as you like without paying the airline's customary fees for Wi-Fi data. Delta won't be playing Santa for long, as the free data period only lasts from December 8, 2021, to January 19, 2022.

To take advantage of the free data, all you need to do is connect your phone or tablet to the in-flight Wi-Fi system and then fire up your Spotify app. There's only one caveat: Your aircraft needs to be equipped with Viasat for its data connectivity, and not every Delta flight has this gear.
