Vevo’s new apps for Apple TV and Android offer a more customized, personal experience

While many people likely know Vevo from seeing its branded channels and videos on YouTube, the company is working hard to establish itself as an entity separate from YouTube. To that end, today the company announced new apps for the Apple TV and Android.

The new Apple TV app is native for tvOS, and focuses on letting the user just listen to music, without actively needing to seek out new songs. The Spotlight section continuously plays songs based on the listener’s tastes based on their favorites list, which users can add or remove artists from either on the Apple TV or via the mobile apps.

Recommended Videos

“Artists and audiences deserve great music video experiences, whether on mobile devices or connected TVs,” Vevo CEO Erik Huggers said in a statement. “The launch of our new Apple TV app represents an important milestone for Vevo. We continue to invest in what we believe is the premium platform for music videos and related original content.”

Apple TV users can easily find new music by navigating through individual artists and videos, or by looking through the top artists by genre. Users’ playlists and favorites sync instantly across platforms.

The new Android app will seem familiar to anyone who has used Vevo’s iOS app since it was updated last year, featuring the same refreshed interface. First time users will now be acted to select their favorite artists, which the app uses to create a personalized Spotlight feed. The app will also create a playlist called “My First Playlist” to help get viewers started watching right away.

Vevo’s new music discovery feature, dubbed “New for You,” is available in the updated Android app at launch. This is a playlist similar to Spotify’s Discover Weekly that appears every Monday, featuring videos recommended for users based on their individual tastes.

The updated apps are available starting today in the Apple TV App Store and the Google Play Store. See Vevo’s website for more details.

What is Apple TV? Price, hardware, software, and more
Apple TV's Insight feature showing character and music information on screen.

We know that sometimes the way companies name their products and services can be a tad confusing, and Apple TV is a perfect example. The company's home entertainment nerve center isn't just a streaming device or an app -- it's an entire ecosystem encompassing hardware, software, and even a premium streaming service.

Apple TV -- the hardware -- is a small streaming device you put in your living room, bedroom, or wherever. The Apple TV app is usable on your mobile device or smart TV and gives you access to much of the same content you’d find on the physical Apple TV box.
