Vevo’s new apps for Apple TV and Android offer a more customized, personal experience

While many people likely know Vevo from seeing its branded channels and videos on YouTube, the company is working hard to establish itself as an entity separate from YouTube. To that end, today the company announced new apps for the Apple TV and Android.

The new Apple TV app is native for tvOS, and focuses on letting the user just listen to music, without actively needing to seek out new songs. The Spotlight section continuously plays songs based on the listener’s tastes based on their favorites list, which users can add or remove artists from either on the Apple TV or via the mobile apps.

“Artists and audiences deserve great music video experiences, whether on mobile devices or connected TVs,” Vevo CEO Erik Huggers said in a statement. “The launch of our new Apple TV app represents an important milestone for Vevo. We continue to invest in what we believe is the premium platform for music videos and related original content.”

Apple TV users can easily find new music by navigating through individual artists and videos, or by looking through the top artists by genre. Users’ playlists and favorites sync instantly across platforms.

The new Android app will seem familiar to anyone who has used Vevo’s iOS app since it was updated last year, featuring the same refreshed interface. First time users will now be acted to select their favorite artists, which the app uses to create a personalized Spotlight feed. The app will also create a playlist called “My First Playlist” to help get viewers started watching right away.

Vevo’s new music discovery feature, dubbed “New for You,” is available in the updated Android app at launch. This is a playlist similar to Spotify’s Discover Weekly that appears every Monday, featuring videos recommended for users based on their individual tastes.

The updated apps are available starting today in the Apple TV App Store and the Google Play Store. See Vevo’s website for more details.

Apple TV has quietly been on board the FAST train all this time
Streaming apps that can be connected to Apple TV.

Apple TV, insofar as the name is concerned, is a bit of a mess. It's hardware — the Apple TV 4K box is still the best streaming hardware you can buy. It's a streaming service unto itself — Apple TV+ is Apple's take on HBO. And its software — tvOS technically is the name of the operating system, but there's also a "TV" app ... on Apple TV.

The Apple TV app itself also is, shall we say, a bit busy. It's home not just to Apple TV+, but also to exclusive sports like MLS Season Pass and Friday Night Baseball. And if you've ever bought a movie or show from Apple, you'll find them there, too. And if you're signed in to another streaming app that plays nice with Apple's TV app — and there are a lot of them — you'll find that content in there, too.

What is WhatsApp? How to use the app, tips, tricks, and more

There’s been no shortage of instant messaging apps over the past decade, as the rise of advanced smartphone platforms has created the need for more sophisticated ways to communicate than traditional SMS text messages allowed for.

In fact, the Apple App Store and Google Play Store are both littered with apps that promised to be the next big thing in mobile communications. Yet, many of those fell by the wayside as they failed to achieve the critical mass of users needed to make them useful. After all, apps designed for communicating with others don’t do you much good unless enough folks are using them.

Apple TV’s multiview feature is now live in beta
Apple TV's multiview feature as seen with Friday Night Baseball.

A new multiview feature — by which you can watch multiple games at one time — has hit the beta track o thef Apple TV operating system. It previously was hinted at in code, and it's now available for actual use.

Again, you'll have to be on the beta track of the Apple TV operating system for this to work at all, and as of right now, that's tvOS 16.5. But once it's enabled, it's a pretty simple process to add additional games, and flip between any of them using the Siri Remote. It wasn't immediately clear if Apple's implementation would be available to other applications, or if it would be kept just within the Apple TV app for now.
