Apple most valuable company on the planet for an afternoon

apple-store-nyThe question was less of an “if” and more of a “when.” Apple’s growth in the last year has been so meteoric that it was only a matter of time before they fought for a spot as the world’s most valuable company.

Today, they were. And then they weren’t.

Catalogued wonderfully by TechCrunch’s MG Siegler, Apple spent much of the afternoon pulling far away from Exxon Mobile’s total valuation, only to watch their share price drop enough to let the oil giant take back the title. With the recent stock market troubles—and Apple not being as hard hit as Exxon—this race became tight very quickly. Three weeks ago, Exxon’s market capitalization was near $410 billion.

Today Exxon finished at finished at $348.32 billion. Apple finished at $346.74 billion.

The market has undergone great uncertainty and turmoil recently with the United States credit rating downgrade. It remains to be seen how this race will play out once the dust has settle. Perhaps Apple’s iPhone 5 and iOS, due out some time this fall, will be the final horse that pulls it ahead in this race.

A person wearing the Samsung Galaxy Ring and the Oura Ring.

Smart rings might be all the rage right now with the Oura Ring 4 and the Samsung Galaxy Ring leading the way, but Apple currently has no plans to join the zeitgeist. In the premium version of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says Apple isn't planning to make a smart ring of its own because it would pull attention away from the Apple Watch. This comes amid all the rumors that have persisted about the so-called Apple Ring.

According to TechRadar, Gurman says that an Apple Ring would "detract from the Apple Watch" and could "cannibalize" sales, especially when the Watch is basically dominating the market and still has room to grow.

Apple Intelligence is right around the corner, with a few absent perks
Apple Intelligence update on iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Back in September. Apple announced that its suite of next-gen AI features would make their way to supported hardware in October. Today, Bloomberg reports that rollout of those AI features – clubbed under the Apple Intelligence banner – will begin on October 28.

The AI toolkit will arrive with the iOS 18.1 update for the iPhone 15 Pro pair, the entire iPhone 16 series, and iPads with M1 (or newer) silicon in the series. Unfortunately, this is not the full Apple Intelligence package that the company announced a while ago.
