Three Cyberpunk 2077 projects in development, multiplayer could be one

Gaming fans haven’t even gotten copies of Cyberpunk 2077 in their homes yet, but CD Projekt Red clearly has a lot of faith in the game’s world. There are three Cyberpunk projects in development including a multiplayer mode for Cyberpunk 2077.

Twitter user Nibel shared the news, which was reported on the Polish economic site Bankier. There are a few things that may have gotten lost in the translation by Google, but it is clear that there are three Cyberpunk projects in development from three different teams. The main game, Cyberpunk 2077, is what the world is already aware of, but the second and third have only been rumors up till now.

A team of about 40 in Wroclaw, Poland, is working on the multiplayer mode in Cyberpunk 2077. Nothing about the game has indicated anything related to multiplayer gameplay up until this point, and it is possible this multiplayer mode will be one of the major expansions to Cyberpunk 2077. 

CD Projekt Red’s strategy for the period between 2016 and 2021 included the release of a AAA project beyond Cyberpunk 2077 before 2021 and plans for that were unchanged as of March this year. What this new report brings to light is that the second project is also set within the Cyberpunk world. CD Projekt Red Vice President Piotr Nielubowicz says this content is being treated “as a really big and innovative project for us.”

This second major project set within the world of Cyberpunk is intriguing, especially since it will release less than two years after the release of Cyberpunk 2077.  When 2077 is released, it will have been almost five years since the release of CD Projekt Red’s last major game, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Five projects total were mentioned in the Bankier report and we already know that an unannounced mobile game is being handled by Spokko, a game studio CD Projekt Red took a majority stake in last year. The other non-Cyberpunk development team is working on Gwent, a Witcher 3 spinoff card game, which just received a new Novigrad content expansion.

CD Projekt Red has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 is being played by 1 million people every day this week, marking a sudden rebound since its launch in December 2020.

The Warsaw-based company expressed its enthusiasm for the whopping statistic in a September 21 tweet, thanking new and returning players for playing the game, which encountered controversy for being released with countless bugs nearly two years ago. "Each day of this week Night City has been visited by 1 million players, both new and returning," the tweet said. The past year-and-a-half havs not been kind to Polish developer CD Projekt Red. The studio -- part of CD Projekt Group, a company that also owns the online games marketplace GOG -- faced enormous criticism with the release of Cyberpunk 2077 and has since been busy fixing the game. In the time since, the studio has faced setback after setback, with its announcements leaning more toward a project being delayed rather than good news for fans.

Outwardly though, the company is appearing to shake off the dust of Cyberpunk 2077. While its short-term ambitions are pointed exclusively at past releases, the studio has future plans. It's looking forward -- and in a big way. A recent earnings report from the company revealed that it's working on numerous unannounced projects, one of which is being co-developed by another studio, The Molasses Flood, and will be based on one of CD Projekt Red's franchises.
Flooding the pipeline
CD Projekt Red's current content plans seek to reinforce what the studio already has out there. Cyberpunk 2077 recently received a current-gen update and will get its first major story expansion next year. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is also set to get its own current-gen update, though its release date has been postponed indefinitely following CD Projekt Red's decision to bring development in-house.
