International architectural firm Foster + Partners has unveiled a design for their latest project, the Kuwait International Airport. Already an expanding region with proposed growth looking to increase, the airport will initially accommodate 13 million passengers per year, with the flexibility to increase to 25 million passengers and to increase that number to 50 million passengers with further development.
The aim of the project is to develop and establish a new regional air hub in the gulf with a design rooted in local forms and materials. The airport will feature a state-of-the-art terminal building which will provide the highest level of comfort despite being located in one of the most arid and inhospitable climates in the world.
Foster + Partners has drawn upon the region’s culture of hospitality with an elegant arrival sequence for travelers, which includes a baggage claim area enveloped by cooling cascades of water and grand landscaping in the form of a lush oasis inhabited by drier planting, and species native to the desert climate that will extend away from the terminals.
