Learning photography using Canon gear may have just gotten a bit simpler with the launch of the company’s new online learning platform. On Wednesday, the camera manufacturer announced Canon Online Learning, a platform for online classes and print materials suitable for several different skill levels.

The new paid platform joins free resources like the Canon Community and blog that teach photographers both basic camera techniques and photography concepts. According to Canon, the new classes are designed for photographers from several different backgrounds and skill levels, from hobbyists and professionals to travelers and parents.

While plans for additional materials are in the works, the online learning platform has launched with seven initial classes:

  • Understanding EOS Camera Operations
  • Photo 101: How to Take Great Pictures
  • Printing Basics & Beyond
  • Great Landscapes Made Easy
  • Child’s Play: Simple Tips for Photographing Children
  • Getting Started with Flash Photography
  • Canon Inside Guide: EOS Rebel Series

The classes are a go-at-your-own-pace style with both video and written materials. Some courses also include diagrams, shot lists, guides, assignments and quizzes.

“Canon has always provided industry-leading educational resources for our customers,” Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO of Canon U.S.A., Inc., said in a press release. “Over the years, we have expanded our offerings to include live workshops, one-on-one in-person sessions, and countless free lectures across the country. Now, for those passionate customers looking to take a deeper dive into photography or videography, we have developed a curriculum of content that addresses the various ways our customers use our products today, and it’s available at their convenience online, day or night. This new program also helps familiarize the imaging community with our wide range of educational tools, allowing them to learn valuable tips from our technical experts, as well as our Explorers of Light professional photographers.”

The courses range in price from $19.99 to $59.99 and are available on the Canon Online Learning page.

Should you buy the Canon EOS R5 or EOS R6? The new mirrorless options compared
canon eos r5 vs r6 r50vs

After entering the full-frame mirrorless market with a camera that lacked several features found in competitors, Canon went all-in with the EOS R5 and R6. Boasting lists of specifications that include the best-yet rating for a full-frame stabilization system and updated autofocus, the EOS R5 and R6 bring many features that pros and serious enthusiasts found lacking with the original Canon EOS R and budget-friendly EOS RP.

Both the EOS R6 and R5 offer the same headlining features, with identical built-in stabilization, the same autofocus system, and the same 12 frames per second bursts. Yet, the two cameras have several differences that may make one a better fit than the other. The EOS R5 is best thought of as Canon’s professional mirrorless, while the EOS R6 is a camera for serious enthusiasts and, in some niche areas, pros on a budget.

Canon’s affordable new full-frame mirrorless lenses are exactly what it needed
canon affordable rf full frame lenses exactly what it needed 85mm f2 macro featured

Canon's new RF lenses bring a desperately needed feature to its mirrorless EOS R system: Affordability. The four lenses announced on Thursday, July 9, are the RF 85mm f/2 Macro, RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1, and two unique telephoto primes with fixed f/11 apertures, a 600mm and an 800mm.

Of these, the $600 85mm f/2 is probably the least interesting, but also the most important. This is just Canon's second sub-$1,000 RF prime lens, joining the 35mm f/1.8, and precisely the type of lens that I have argued full-frame mirrorless systems need. Compared to Canon's unwieldy, $2,700 RF 85mm f/1.2, it is small, lightweight, and -- most importantly -- attainable.

How to take a long-exposure photograph
Olympus PEN E-PL9 review

Blur can be either a frustrating flaw or an artful tool to illustrate motion within a still photograph. A long exposure turns blur into something positive, smoothing waves, creating light paintings, obliterating crowds, and making traffic actually look attractive.

Understanding long exposure opens up endless creative possibilities and, thankfully, isn’t terribly hard to learn. You’ll need a tripod, and, if you plan to take long-exposure photographs during the day, neutral density filters, along with your camera and lens.
