Foursquare 3.0 lands right in time for SXSW

new leaderboardThere was a time when Foursquare was more or less the ruler and lone competitor in the geo-social market. Obviously, that time has come and gone, and the local-GPS-social-coupon-check-in arena is bursting at the seams. Despite this saturation, Foursquare has managed to keep pace and stay ahead of rivals – all while growing more than 3,000 percent in 2010.

As SXSW (the birthplace of the site back in 2009) looms in the near future, Foursquare is bringing everything it’s got and offering its users a significant improvement to the application. The team admits that the growth has been a formidable challenge: Adapting its system to work for 100,000 people to 7,500,000 was anything but easy, and this kept the team from taking bold steps with the site. But now it’s ready to issue some very noticeable additions and improvements.

Foursquare 3.0 will add a new “Explore” tab, which lets users describe a place they’d like to visit and receive local suggestions. These suggestions are based on a combination of places you and your friends have visited, as well as old standbys and places you tend to check-in at. Foursquare is essentially aggregating all of the information tied to your account and recommending the best possible options for your mood. Of course, there are some built-in search terms for this feature, standards like “coffee” and “nightlife.” And of course, Foursquare does this one better with search options like “pancakes,” “80s music,” and “fireplaces.”

The upgrade also puts renewed emphasis on the leaderboard. Users can now acquire points for more actions – trying a new place, organizing group activities, seeing old friends – and view a weekly barometer of their running totals.

new leaderboardOf course, vendor loyalty and mayorship is still the most prestigious of Foursquare honors, and now local business will be able to offer more types of rewards to returning patrons. Merchants can now offer discounts or other specials to swarms, groups of friends, regulars, newbies, mayors, and even have the option of opening up the deal to everyone. The Places screen will also display a list of deals in your area.

That’s a lot of ground to cover in an upgrade, and it likely won’t be without a few glitches. But it’s surely ambitious, and iOS and Android users will be able to check it out tonight. BlackBerry users, you’ll have to keep on waiting: There will be an update this week, but it won’t feature the entirety of the 3.0 upgrade.

I paid Meta to ‘verify’ me — here’s what actually happened
An Instagram profile on an iPhone.

In the fall of 2023 I decided to do a little experiment in the height of the “blue check” hysteria. Twitter had shifted from verifying accounts based (more or less) on merit or importance and instead would let users pay for a blue checkmark. That obviously went (and still goes) badly. Meanwhile, Meta opened its own verification service earlier in the year, called Meta Verified.

Mostly aimed at “creators,” Meta Verified costs $15 a month and helps you “establish your account authenticity and help[s] your community know it’s the real us with a verified badge." It also gives you “proactive account protection” to help fight impersonation by (in part) requiring you to use two-factor authentication. You’ll also get direct account support “from a real person,” and exclusive features like stickers and stars.
