Instagram is finally letting you see your DMs on desktop

Now you can slide into your DMs while away your phone.

Instagram now lets you read and send direct messages from your desktop, according to an announcement on Friday, April 10.

Users cheered the much-requested new feature, which had been in the works and available in limited testing since January.

“Our hope is that this will give people, creators, and businesses easier access to your messages so that they can stay in touch with the friends and followers that matter to them,” an Instagram representative told Digital Trends at the time.

Desktop users now see a DM icon on the top right navigation bar when accessing Instagram from a browser. Users can send photos off their computers, text or hearts while on desktop.

The rollout began at 7 a.m. PT, according to The Verge.

Instagram has been adding more features for its desktop users recently, including making Stories available to view online.

Twitter is reportedly working on paid DMs to celebrities

In what appears to be another effort to help Twitter generate revenue at the start of its Elon Musk era, the social media platform is reportedly working on paid Direct Messaging (DM), with a particular emphasis on those paid messages being sent to celebrities.

On Thursday, The New York Times published a report in which it mentioned that -- according to internal documents it saw and "two people with knowledge of the work" -- that Twitter was working on a paid DM feature that would allow users to send messages to celebrities for a fee. The fee structure for this feature apparently hasn't been officially finalized yet, but The Times did note that it could be "as little as a few dollars per direct message."

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on your favorite social media platforms are apparently here to stay. At least that seems to be the case for one Meta-owned platform.

On Wednesday, as part of its Creator Week event, Meta announced that Instagram will soon let creators make and sell their own NFTs on the app itself. The new ability was described as another way for fans to support their favorite creators.

Instagram appears to be down right now, but the glitch many users are reporting is an odd one. It's not just that users are having trouble accessing the popular photo- and video-sharing app, but they're also having trouble accessing their own accounts and have reported being hit with account suspension notices.

On Monday morning, the apparent Instagram outage was reported by users on Twitter and on Downdetector. Both sites included numerous reports saying that users suddenly lost access to their IG accounts and were given account suspension notices.
