President Obama is now on Instagram

Photo-sharing social network Instagram received an endorsement Tuesday evening that comes straight from the top — President Barack Obama is now a member.

In a post to the official Barack Obama Tumblr blog, which is one of many social media elements of the president’s 2012 re-election campaign, the country’s “first official Instagram photo” was posted. The slightly stylized image (Valencia filter, maybe?) shows a behind-the-scenes look at Obama’s video-conference with Iowa caucus-goers who participated in the state’s Republican presidential primary.

At the time of this writing, the photo has 321notes (likes, comments or shares) on Tumblr, and 1,337 likes on Instagram itself. The president has also racked up 13,742 followers on Instagram, but so far has not followed anyone back.

Regardless of your opinion about President Barack Obama’s governing policies, there’s no denying that he’s in touch with his tech-loving constituents. After using social media to help catapult him into the White House in 2008, the commander-in-chief can now be found on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube and, of course, Instagram.

The addition of President Obama to its membership is only the latest benchmark of success for the Silicon Valley startup. After garnering 15 million users, the iOS-only app won Apple’s “iPhone App of the Year” prize for 2011, and was named one of our “best tech startups of 2011.”

Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino tweeted on Monday that despite the current fuss over Meta’s new and very similar Threads app, Twitter had its largest usage day last week.

Subtly including the name of Meta’s new app, which launched to great fanfare last Wednesday, Yaccarino did her best to sing Twitter’s praises, tweeting: “Don’t want to leave you hanging by a thread … but Twitter, you really outdid yourselves! Last week we had our largest usage day since February. There’s only ONE Twitter. You know it. I know it.”

The pandemic was supposed to have made us all comfortable with video calls, but many folks still don’t particularly enjoy the process.

Having to think about what to wear, or how our hair looks, or even fretting about puffy eyes following another bout of hay fever can sometimes be a bit much, even more so if it’s an early-morning call and your brain is still in bed.
