The White House rickrolls Twitter user

U.S. President Barack Obama has always made it clear that he sees the value in social media, but a recent tweet from The White House offers some humorous confirmation of just how in-touch with the Twitter-verse he and his staff really are.

Anyone following the official White House Twitter feed knows that the last few days have been filled with messages regarding the ongoing efforts to plan out the nation’s fiscal future. The @WhiteHouse account has been posting updates and excerpts from the President’s budget discussions, as well as responding to questions from Twitter users.

It’s also been doing its best to make the discussion of policy, well… fun.

When Twitter user David Wiggs tweeted that yesterday’s White House correspondence briefing “isn’t nearly as entertaining as yesterday’s,” the White House team offered an apology and a link to something it promised would be a little more entertaining.

Here’s the text of the @WhiteHouse response: “Sorry to hear that. Fiscal policy is important, but can be dry sometimes. Here’s something more fun: http://tinyurl.com/y8ufsnp

Following that link takes you to — wait for it — the video for Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.”

So, not only did David Wiggs get rickrolled, he got rickrolled by President Obama himself. That’s resume material, buddy.

Subtly including the name of Meta’s new app, which launched to great fanfare last Wednesday, Yaccarino did her best to sing Twitter’s praises, tweeting: “Don’t want to leave you hanging by a thread … but Twitter, you really outdid yourselves! Last week we had our largest usage day since February. There’s only ONE Twitter. You know it. I know it.”

The pandemic was supposed to have made us all comfortable with video calls, but many folks still don’t particularly enjoy the process.

Having to think about what to wear, or how our hair looks, or even fretting about puffy eyes following another bout of hay fever can sometimes be a bit much, even more so if it’s an early-morning call and your brain is still in bed.
