Bad news, old Android Wear watches may not get the latest software update

moto 360 tips and tricks wear next 120114
Proud owners of the first Android Wear watches that ever went on sale may find themselves lagging behind the newer models, because they won’t receive the latest Android Wear 2.0 software update. Announced in May, the update isn’t revolutionary, but it does add some great new features, including smarter watch faces, message improvements, and better fitness tracking ability.

LG was the first to break the bad news through its official Twitter account. The message referred to the original LG G Watch, and in reply to an enquiry about the update’s arrival time, the company said the watch had been discontinued, and therefore not on its list for Android Wear 2.0. While the G Watch has been superseded in the range several times, it’s still used, and several owners conveyed their displeasure at LG’s decision.

A few weeks later, Motorola also took to Twitter with news of the original Moto 360 smartwatch. Likely in wider use than the G Watch, thanks to it being the first with a stylish circular face, the device will also miss out on Android Wear 2.0. The Motorola Support Twitter account said in reply to a follower question that the watch definitely wouldn’t be updated.

The Moto 360 is less than two years old, making it a surprise that it won’t be supported any more, a move that suggests it’s a hardware issue. The first generation Moto 360 has 512MB of RAM and a 1GHz Texas Instruments processor inside. The LG G Watch also has 512MB of RAM, but is powered by a faster 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400. It’s identical internally to the G Watch R, and the Watch Urbane.

Samsung, Sony, and Asus haven’t spoken out about Android Wear 2.0 for the Gear Live, SmartWatch 3, or the ZenWatch respectively yet. Android is no stranger to missing updates, but there are potentially many smartwatch early-adopters who will be frustrated by the news. Owners of newer Android Wear watches that can make use of the new software’s more hardware-dependent features such as Wi-Fi and internal speaker systems, should all receive the new software in the near future.

Together, Google and Samsung just may have a chance to beat the Apple Watch
Sameer Samat - google x samsung

At this moment in time, Apple owns the smartwatch space, and the Apple Watch’s status as the world’s bestselling watch is well-deserved. Google, on the other hand, has let Wear OS stagnate over the years, and while the dedicated companies that use Wear OS keep making great hardware, the software usually feels substandard.

Samsung makes the only true competitor to the Apple Watch. The Galaxy Watch 3’s fluid, well-designed Tizen software and innovative control system make it a winner, but it lacks Google apps and services. Neither Google nor Samsung can beat Apple on their own, but perhaps together they can?

Google Pixel 4a Front

Android 11 is here. The new mobile operating system isn't necessarily as groundbreaking as some previous updates, but it still brings several new privacy features, as well as some visual changes that should make accessing things like smart home devices a whole lot easier.

Of course, you might be wondering exactly when your phone is getting Android 11. The good news is that Android 11 is coming to more devices week by week. The bad news is that even months after it debuted, some phones still haven't received the update or only have early betas available. Still, some big names have rolled out the update to popular models — hopefully including the one in your hand.

Big Moto Edge Plus software update adds Android 11 and mobile desktop feature
motorola moto edge plus verizon android 11 update news ready for

Own a Motorola Moto Edge Plus, or considering getting one? There’s good news on the software front as an Android 11 update is headed to the phone very soon, along with a new set of features called “Ready For,” where your phone can be connected to other devices for a big-screen experience.

To access Ready For, the Edge Plus connects to a TV or monitor using a USB-C to HDMI or USB-C to USB-C cable, where the Ready For Experience Hub pops up to guide you through the new functionality. At its heart, Ready For works a little like Samsung’s DeX, where you view multiple windows, documents, videos, and images on a larger screen just like if you were using a desktop computer. The Moto Edge Plus also works with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to complete the desktop-like experience.
