Fitbit’s Alta is a stylish band that offers the usual functions in a range of fashions

fitbit alta launch
Fitbit has churned out another one. The fitness tracking wearable company added a new band to its ever-growing list — the Fitbit Alta — and this one distinguishes itself through its aesthetics and form.

The Fitbit Alta has all the bells and whistles of the recently launched Fitbit Blaze and other similar Fitbit products, including Reminders to Move, SmartTrack, weekly exercise goals, as well as all-day activity and sleep tracking. What makes it really special is that it focuses on interchangeable bands, so you can customize how the wearable looks on you for all sorts of occasions.

The San Francisco-based company says the Alta is “designed with a satin finish,” and has a stainless steel body. The device will have a variety of band types to choose from, ranging from different colors, to premium materials like leather and silver. Fitbit says Tony Burch, who has collaborated on designs with the company before, will be creating new styles and “unique ways to accessorize the device” soon.

The band itself certainly looks stylish, though, particularly when outfitted with some of the more premium materials. The Alta also has a quick release mechanism that allows wearers to speedily change their bands to a material that’s more suitable for where they’re headed.

What’s neat about the Alta is that it uses an OLED display that you tap to present your tracking statistics, or just to check the time. Like most smart bands these days, the Alta also offers smart notifications from your phone.

Like the Blaze, the wearable has a five-day battery life, and is compatible with iOS, Android, and Windows Phone devices, so you can view all your data history and more in the Fitbit app. The Alta will be available in black, blue, teal, or plum, as well as a silver version. The premium-hide leather variant comes in graphite and blush pink, with a camel colored option coming soon. A gold variant will also soon be available.

If you want to buy the bands separately, the classic colored ones will cost you $30, the leather bands will cost you $60, and the stainless steel silver and gold bangles will cost $100.

The Alta costs $130 and is available for pre-order now at Fitbit.com. Tomorrow, the device will be available at major retailers including Amazon, Best Buy, and REI. It will be released in the beginning of March for North America, and will be available internationally in April.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 vs. Fitbit Sense
The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 smartwatch, worn on a person's wrist.

The Galaxy Watch 4 is Samsung's take on a modern, hi-tech wearable that doesn't imitate an old-school analog wristwatch. It eschews the classic design of its predecessors for a sleeker, more streamlined look, while also providing some excellent hardware and features. These include a Super AMOLED touchscreen, 16GB of internal storage, generous battery life, and some great health-tracking software.

It's certainly one of the best smartwatches out there, but in a market saturated by Apple Watches and various Android equivalents, it certainly isn't without competitors. One of these is the Fitbit Sense, which in 2020 emerged to offer a premium version of the core Fitbit experience, replete with an ECG sensor, a choice of virtual assistants, and a wealth of fitness features.
