The Google Pixel Watch could finally get released next week, report says

Google has been rumored to be working on a smartwatch, called the Google Pixel Watch, for years now. After rumors suggested the device would finally be released at Google’s hardware event last year, many were left disappointed when it didn’t materialize. Now, fresh rumors suggest that the watch could finally be released alongside the Google Pixel 4 at the company’s hardware event scheduled for Tuesday, October 15.

The rumors come from Nikkei Asian Review, which cites an unidentified source close to the matter. Nikkei has been able to accurately predict hardware releases in the past. The outlet also said that Google would launch a 5G variant of the Pixel 4, along with a new notebook.

While the report doesn’t mention the Pixel Watch name, Google’s hardware line has been tied to the Pixel name for four years now — so it would be a little strange to see a new smartwatch that doesn’t bear the branding.

Plenty of rumors have emerged over the past few years hinting at what the Pixel Watch could end up looking like. It’s highly likely that the device will run the Google Wear OS operating system, although some rumors indicate the device could be a hybrid watch. Google acquired a new hybrid watch technology and 20 engineers from Fossil for $40 million earlier this year, and it’s possible that tech could end up being a part of the Pixel Watch. Some reports have suggested that the acquisition was more about the engineering talent than the actual tech — and it would be a little strange to see Google release a smartwatch that doesn’t feature the company’s own smartwatch operating system. The new watch would also give Google a chance to show off Wear OS the way it was meant to be implemented, like the Pixel phone did for Android before it.

Hopefully, the device will also feature decent fitness-tracking tech, which would put it in competition with the Apple Watch. Companies have been increasingly focusing on health and fitness for their smartwatches over the past few years.

We’ll be covering the event next week, so check back on Tuesday to see details about what Google announces at its annual hardware event.

It’s official: the Google Pixel Fold is coming. After months of rumors and speculation, Google revealed the Pixel Fold on Star Wars Day, of all days. With the tagline “May The Fold Be With You,” Google dropped a tweet that showed off the Pixel Fold in all of its glory. And now, after the official announcement at Google I/O 2023, the Google Pixel Fold is shaping up to be one of the more exciting releases this year.

I’ve always been an iPhone gal, but since I joined Digital Trends, I’ve been checking out Android phones more than ever before. I’ve taken quite a liking to the Pixel lineup of devices, including the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7a, which also just dropped today. But the Google Pixel Fold is the one device I can’t wait to get my hands on, especially when compared to the competing Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 (and the Galaxy Z Fold 5, which is likely coming this year too).

While the technical specs of a phone play a large part in the decision-making process of picking up a new device, how it looks can be equally as important for many people. Luckily, phone manufacturers have caught on to that fact and provide multiple color options for most modern smartphones — allowing buyers to have a few options when picking up their favorite new smartphones.

The color options that Google has had on offer over the past few years have been some of our favorites, and the new Pixel 7a is following in the footsteps of countless Google devices by being offered in some excellent shades. There are four Pixel 7a color options in total, and honestly, it's a little tough to pick a favorite.

The Google Pixel 7a is Google's latest addition to its midrange A-series smartphones. It's likely to be one of the best options for anyone who wants a strong handset with pure Android, solid performance, and an exceptional camera.

But we can't touch on the hardware without addressing one of the most common questions about any new smartphone. Namely, does the phone have a headphone jack? Smartphone manufacturers have been on a crusade against the venerable port in recent years, and the headphone jack has been excised from the vast majority of the phones you can buy today. So, does the Google Pixel 7a include a headphone jack, or will you need other ways to listen to music, audiobooks, and podcasts?
