Samsung brings FDA-approved ECG monitoring to the Galaxy Watch 3

Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 and Galaxy Watch Active 2 users are about to get access to a major new feature. Samsung has announced that it has received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for an electrocardiogram (ECG) monitor on some of its smartwatches — meaning that users of those devices can access the ECG Monitor app to check for heart rhythm irregularities, and even find out if they have signs of atrial fibrillation, or AFib.

Samsung isn’t the first to offer this feature — Apple launched the Apple Watch Series 4 with an FDA-approved ECG sensor in 2018. It’s better late than never — especially considering how helpful having access to an ECG sensor can be.

The most obvious use for the ECG sensor is to monitor for signs of AFib, which is a heart irregularity that can, in some cases, lead to a stroke. It’s important to note that the device can only track signs of AFib — and data from the watch should not be taken as a medical diagnosis without the consultation of a cardiologist. But it very well may be the first indication people get and can lead them to visit a medical professional.

Using the ECG Monitor app is very similar to doing so on the Apple Watch. To do so, you’ll need to sit still and rest your arm on a flat surface. You’ll also need to place your finger on the top button. After a few seconds, your watch will classify your heart rhythm as either Sinus Rhythm, which is a normal heartbeat, or AFib. Once the reading is complete, users can also log symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, and so on.

The ECG monitor helps make the Galaxy Watch 3 an impressive overall fitness tracker. While Apple beat Samsung to the punch on this particular feature, Samsung did beat Apple on offering a blood oxygen monitor. The two features combined make for a pretty compelling fitness watch experience, and while you won’t get the same tracking or analysis as you get on a dedicated running watch, it’s an excellent option thanks to a great all-around experience.

The Galaxy Watch 3 received pretty stellar reviews when it was first released earlier this year, as did the Galaxy Watch Active 2 when it was released last year. They’re both available for purchase practically anywhere, including Amazon and Samsung’s website.

So far, it's largely just Samsung that has defined the nascent flip smartphone market, and while flipping and folding phones haven't quite broken into the mainstream yet, the Z Flip 5 is sure to tempt more and more people into buying into the future of smartphone design. The biggest new addition to the Z Flip 5 is the much larger outer screen, which is a big upgrade over the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4's much smaller display and worthy of rivaling the Motorola Razr Plus's impressively large outer display.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is sure to be a technological marvel, packed with the latest and most powerful hardware Samsung can get its hands on. But what about a piece of very old tech? What about the humble 3.5mm headphone jack? Samsung is in its fifth generation of selling foldables. While the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is its biggest upgrade to the clamshell form factor, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is an experiential upgrade this year – which might cause some problems for Samsung.

The year is 2023, and more smartphone manufacturers are joining the foldable bandwagon. With the Google Pixel Fold and the upcoming OnePlus folding phone, Samsung finally has some competition in the U.S. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 doesn’t seem like a device that I would instantly buy over others.

Is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 waterproof?
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 with its main display open.

Samsung has unveiled its newest foldable smartphones — the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. Both the new Fold and the Flip come with significant improvements, including a thinner profile, a new hinge mechanism that keeps the phones shut tight when folded, and a bespoke Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 "for Galaxy" chipset. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 clamshell also earns a new flex-worthy design upgrade over last year's Galaxy Z Flip 4 with its new and larger 3.4-inch outer display. It can now run numerous full-size apps and supports full keyboard input.

The improved hinge and the new display on the Galaxy Z Flip 5 sure make the clamshell phone desirable. On top of that, Samsung's proactive approach with frequent software updates -- and the promise of four Android platform upgrades and five years of security updates -- make the Flip 5 highly desirable to those who wish for a compact and swanky phone. Starting at just a penny short of $1,000, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is also one of the lightest purchases on the pocket for anyone who wants to try folding smartphones.
