Why the Gold Apple Watch Costs $10,000

It was always clear that Apple would price the luxury edition of its Apple Watch out of reach of most consumers, but when the details were finally announced at this week’s ‘Spring Forward’ event, its $10,000 tag was even higher than many had been expecting. And depending on the size, materials, and band you go for, it could even cost as much as $17,000.

As soon as the jokers behind comedy site CollegeHumor discovered how much the Cupertino company is asking for the top-end Apple Watch Edition, they set about knocking together an amusing skit telling us why they think the tech titan has launched such a pricey device.

Shot in Apple’s usual minimalist style, the dulcet tones of ‘Jony Ive’ kick off proceedings.

“The gold Apple Watch is a truly revolutionary product,” Apple’s chief designer explains, before adding, “But its most groundbreaking feature is that it allows you to communicate with unrivaled accuracy that you have $10,000.”

‘Tim Cook’ also delivers plenty of comical lines in the two-minute piece, though best you see for yourself by watching CollegeHumor’s effort above.

Although Apple’s smartwatch offers the same user experience whether you opt for the $350 version or the $10,000+ Apple Watch Edition, the company is hoping there’s enough well-off fashionistas out there who’ll see its new gadget as a must-have luxury item, or, as this video suggests, as a way of letting others know that they’ve got a few bucks in the bank.

It's official: The next big Apple event is set for September 10, just around the corner. It's where we'll likely see the iPhone 11 range it Android and possibly a new Apple Watch -- and maybe some surprises.

Invites were sent out to media outlets confirming the September 10 date, which has been rumored for several weeks. The invite shows a colorful Apple logo and text that says "By Innovation Only."

If you own an Apple TV -- one that runs the company's tvOS -- you might already know one of its handiest features: The ability to mirror content from your iOS or macOS device, like an iPhone, onto your TV screen using AirPlay. It's a great way to let multiple people see what's on your device without having to crowd around a small screen. But there are two big limitations to AirPlay for mirroring. First, it only works with Apple devices. Even if you own one of the many new AirPlay 2-enabled TVs from LG, Samsung, and others, you still need an iOS or macOS device to mirror from. Second, you can only mirror one Apple device at a time, which seems like a missed opportunity given how big some TVs are.

Ditto, a subscription-based video sharing service created by Squirrels, is a solution for both of these restrictions, thanks to its new Receiver app for tvOS. The app lets you mirror the content of almost any device's screen -- including PCs and Android devices -- and gives you the ability to simultaneously display up to four of them. For PCs, it even works on older Apple TV generation 2 and 3 models.

The Galaxy Watch 4 is Samsung's take on a modern, hi-tech wearable that doesn't imitate an old-school analog wristwatch. It eschews the classic design of its predecessors for a sleeker, more streamlined look, while also providing some excellent hardware and features. These include a Super AMOLED touchscreen, 16GB of internal storage, generous battery life, and some great health-tracking software.

It's certainly one of the best smartwatches out there, but in a market saturated by Apple Watches and various Android equivalents, it certainly isn't without competitors. One of these is the Fitbit Sense, which in 2020 emerged to offer a premium version of the core Fitbit experience, replete with an ECG sensor, a choice of virtual assistants, and a wealth of fitness features.
